Quick Tempered Rice from Leftover Rice

Let’s begin the recipe using leftover rice.

Introduction:
I had loosened the rice early in the morning as I had to prepare breakfast. Nothing came to mind at first, so I finally thought of making tempered rice using the leftover rice.

Here are the ingredients I used for the tempered rice: the leftover rice that I had already loosened, one small potato, tomato, and finely chopped onion.

Ingredients from the basic spice box:

  • Mustard seeds
  • Cumin seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • Red chilli powder
  • Onion-garlic masala
  • Curry leaf powder

Method:

The pan is heated. Let’s add oil first, then add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. They’re crackling nicely. Now add chopped onion and sauté slightly. Next, add the potato followed by the tomato and sauté it well.

Let’s cover it for a while to let it steam, and then check if the potato is cooked. Yes, it’s done.

Now add a bit of turmeric, curry leaf powder, red chilli powder—just enough for taste—and stir again slightly.

Add the loosened rice now, mix everything thoroughly and sauté. Add salt as per taste. Sauté once more thoroughly. Let’s taste it to check if the salt and spice are balanced. Yes, it tastes right.

Add a pinch of sugar to balance the flavours and give it a final stir. Our quick and delicious tempered rice is now ready.

Let’s serve it on a plate. Place the rice in the centre, arrange tomato slices on the side, and sprinkle dry grated coconut on top.

There you go! Our tempered rice is ready. It’s a perfect breakfast option for busy mornings.
